How to Make Marijuana Edibles

The best approach to making weed edibles is to first learn how to make weed butter, or ‘cannabutter’. Once you’ve found a good recipe, you can then use it to make all sorts of edibles including brownies, cookies and other baked goods-anything that requires butter or coconut oil. You can also use the butter as a spread on toast or as a boost in your tea or coffee.

Due to its versatility, we’ve included some simple instructions on how to make weed butter so that you can be the creator of your own edibles recipes.

The quality and taste of your cannabutter will naturally fall upon the quality of your bud, so be sure to use the best quality cannabis you have access to. If you don’t have high quality flower you can use a higher quantity of a lower grade strain to insure more potency. Additionally, you can use ‘shake’ which is the stuff at the bottom of your cannabis bag.

It is essential to decarboxylate the buds before adding them to your butter and you can do this by baking them on a tray. Though it is an extra step, heating your cannabis will convert the non-psychoactive chemical THCA into the desired chemical of THC. Decarboxylated bud also makes for a tastier result.

How to make cannabutter;

  • You will need a scale, baking pan, parchment paper, pot, spatula, cheese cloth, funnel, clear bowl
  • This batch calls for 7-10 grams cannabis, 1 C butter, 1 C water
  1. Lay out your tools and ingredients and use the scale to measure your weed
  2. Preheat the oven to 240 degrees F and distribute the buds onto a parchment lined pan
  3. Bake slow and low for 30-40 mins, shaking the tray intermittently to rotate the buds
  4. Mix your water and butter into a pot and simmer on low. Do not boil. The water helps to prevent the butter from burning and will pull the impurities from your cannabutter through the process of separation
  5. Roughly grind your baked cannabis in a grinder and pour it into the sauce pan with the butter mixture
  6. Simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring frequently and never allowing it to boil. You can simmer it for longer if you would like more flavour and potency but 2-3 hours will suffice.
  7. Cover your funnel with cheese cloth and hover it over the bowl while pouring your mixture into it. Allow it to strain naturally without squeezing the cheese cloth to insure optimal flavour
  8. Place it in the fridge until the water has separated from the butter (up to 8 hours). Take out the butter and discard the water below. You will be left with your cannabis infused butter.

You can refer to the general rule of using a pound of butter (2 C) for every half ounce of weed. For now, the above recipe will give you a fairly potent product.

You can share your marijuana treats with a gathering of friends you’d like to experience them with. You can organize a cannabis-infused themed party where everyone must bring food made from a cannabutter recipe. Have fun with it, experiment and enjoy!

How to make weed brownies

Weed brownies are a dangerous treat, as they contain all the favourite components of a classic chewy brownie with the added element of cannabis.

Marijuana is an appetite stimulant which makes it easy to go for another piece of pot brownie when you’ve got the munchies. If you ask me, it’s a stoner’s dream come true.

We’ve included a recipe below for your convenience, but feel free to use any of the ones online that catch your fancy. Simply substitute the butter for weed butter in any given recipe.

The one below has been tested by its maker so it should contain the appropriate potency, however, to be safe we recommend eating a ¼ piece at a time, once you’ve divided up your brownies into squares.

Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ C flour
  • 120-150 grams chocolate
  • 1 ½ C sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 eggs
  • ¾ C cannabutter
  • Your choice of walnuts, mint oil, berries, chocolate chips, etc

Instructions

Start by melting your chocolate in a bowl over a pot of simmering water. Stir constantly.

Next, melt the cannabutter into the chocolate mixture and incorporate fully.

Remove it from the heat and mix in the salt, vanilla and sugar (if using mint oil, add it now).

Wisk in 1 egg at a time until fully blended. Sprinkle in the flour and stir until there are no lumps (add any walnuts or berries if you are using them).

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking tray with parchment paper. You can grease the tray with oil if you do not have parchment paper.

Bake it for 25-30 minutes and use a tooth pick or butter knife to check the inside. If it comes out gooey, leave it in for another few minutes until your tooth pick comes out dry.

Take it out of the oven and let it cool before cutting into squares.

To do this, pick up the edges of your parchment paper and transfer onto a bread board. Cut into typical sized pieces and only eat a ¼ of a piece at a time until you know how potent it is.

You can read below for details on how long they take to kick in.

Once that is clear, you can dose however much you like. Be sure to label the container where the brownies are stored so that someone doesn’t mistaken them for regular brownies.

Alternatively;

Some cannabis users like to take kief collected from the bottom of their grinder and dissolve it directly into the butter before making weed edibles. Because kief is already fairly concentrated, this can have an adequate effect on the outcome of your cannabis infused food.

Feel free to use coconut or canola oil in place of butter, as long as the weed has a fat soluble substance it can dissolve in to.

How long do edibles take to kick in?

Unlike the immediate effects of smoking cannabis, weed edibles can take 1-2 hours to kick in, depending on your metabolism. On some occasions, a person may not feel the effects of an edible until eating a meal which helps to kick start the digestive system and metabolize the THC.

Once you feel high, it can last anywhere from 4-8 hours and can be 10 times stronger than that of smoking a joint. Make sure to experiment when you don’t have any big plans on the agenda, as you will most likely want to take a hard nap once the ‘burn out’ phase hits.

Using raw cocao nibs or dark chocolate in your edibles can enhance its effects by activating the cannabinoids in the brain that respond to the cannabinoids in marijuana.

Add a sprinkle of raw cocao nibs to your brownie batter and you have yourself a healthier, antioxidant-rich edible that will compliment it nicely. It can even help mask the strong flavour of cannabis if that is your preference.

With too much THC in your edibles, it’s possible to stay high for up to 3 days. Of course, the peak of your high will have been long passed but you will feel what is called a ‘weed hangover’ when taking too much.

That is why it’s important to monitor the amount of THC in your edibles. If you don’t have a precise way to do this, you can simply eat small pieces at a time, whether it’s an edible cookie, brownie or gummy. After all, you can always do more but you can’t do less.
